Disastrous week – but new challenge set !

Haven’t written in a while as I haven’t been too well. I never got to run the Bridge to Brisbane as I woke up on the Sunday morning at 2.30am when I was meant to get up and meet the girls but my chest was tight and my throat was sore, so warning bells rang…do I risk it and run or do I be sensible and not…I texted my friend and decided no I wouldn’t run. I was really disappointed but I think I made the right decision as a 1.5k hill up and down to start may well have sent me over the edge!

I haven’t trained since and hadn’t trained the week before as I wasn’t feeling 100% and so I have itchy feet now, needing to train. So I went to a Boxercise class tonight and gave it 100% ready to kick start next week.

So post Bridge to Brisbane I figured I needed a new challenge to keep me on track, focussed and ready for race season next year but I wanted to do something different.

Triathlons are out for me as I am not a strong swimmer and have no desire to be swam over and pulled down by the stronger contenders, and the thought of getting on a bike dripping wet having just swum and still having a run after the cycle really makes me shudder, so instead I decided on P90x.

P90x looks initially like one of those things that guys in the gym do to build up muscle and avoid having to run on the treadmill and do any cardio and still look fit, but on closer inspection I was pretty impressed, not to mention that singer P!nk does it.

It’s a home based exercise program, you just need the dvds, a chin up bar and some weights and off you go but that’s where the easy work ends and the hard work begins. There are twelve different exercise programs that you have to partake in at some time or another over 3 months:

  • Chest & Back
  • Plyometrics
  • Shoulders & Arms
  • Yoga X
  • Legs & Back
  • Kenpo X
  • X Stretch
  • Core Synergistics
  • Chest, Shoulders & Triceps
  • Back & Biceps
  • Cardio X
  • Ab Ripper X

So I went out and bought my chin up bar, some more weights, some resistance bands and yoga blocks and I am all set. My challenge starts on Monday and I am also intending to try and fit a couple of runs a week in in order to maintain my running fitness – maybe I am mad! But we’ll see.

I’ll let you know how I go! In the mean time, for the rest of the week I am recovering from Boxercise tonight, will run on Friday and Saturday along with a Revs class, then rest on Sunday ready to kick some butt with P90x on Monday.

What challenges have you set yourself? What’s the most extreme challenge you have ever done?

  1. HI, I am wondering where you got your p90x.
I am in Brisbane, and was wondering if it is sold in any stores. If not, what is shipping like to australia? Thanks!

    1. Hi I can’t remember where I got mine from now but I think it was in the USA as I dont think there is any DVD regions on the DVDs as I couldn’t find a stockist here in Australia. I think it might have even been free shipping. Let me know if you get stuck and I’ll try and find old emails. It was a while ago…
