Running isn't a glamorous sport really, especially when you are running for 3 hours and have a sensitive stomach or have eaten the wrong foods the day before, so any long distance runners that say they have never had to make a mercy dash somewhere are lying!

The faster you can go over a shorter distance, the stronger you are for a longer run it's as simple as that.
I took today off work and ran for two hours with my running friend and it was great, no pressure to keep up or to run flat out, we just ran comfortably although managed to get lost! and we ended up scrapping the route and just running around Forest Lake for 2 hours, chatting and running and just being outside - my perfect run.
